Guest View: Fishing industry needs research money as well as disaster relief

The elections may be over, but the current Congress still has work to do.

On Sept. 13, 2012, acting U.S. Secretary of Commerce Rebecca Blank declared the Northeast’s groundfish industry a federal disaster, opening the door for Congress to allocate funds for fishery disaster aid. Of course, any disaster relief should first address the needs of fishermen and their families. But the package currently being negotiated should also include funds to reinvigorate scientific research, which is essential to maximizing the economic benefits of tomorrow’s fishing industry.

Guest View: Let’s not miss another opportunity

In the August 14, 2012 Standard Times Rep. Cabral wrote a guest editorial.

Last month, less than two weeks before the end of the Legislature’s 2011-12 formal sessions, I, along with Sen. Montigny and our House colleagues, learned that the New Bedford Public Schools were about $2.7 million short of the amount they should have received in state aid (Chapter 70 funds). I say “about” because the exact number is still unknown.

Guest View: Fighting for education in Gateway Cities

In the April 4, 2012 Standard Times Rep. Cabral wrote a guest editorial.

Today, the Massachusetts Gateway Cities Legislative Caucus, which I co-chair with Sen. Benjamin Downing of Pittsfield, will meet with Education Secretary Paul Reville to discuss Gov. Patrick’s Gateway Cities Education Agenda and strategize how best to ensure its implementation. The governor’s plan is an important first step for our schools and I will advocate in the upcoming budget debate for the funding the governor requested.

But much more will be needed.
